UV LED curing systems are now widely used to cure UV adhesives, conformal coatings, inks and sealants in electronics, printing and industrial bonding. To obtain a fast and reliable cure, engineers must control the energy density delivered to the material. This news article explains what UV LED curing energy density means, how to calculate it, and how to measure it correctly in production.
Energy density, also called the UV dose, is the total amount of UV energy received per unit area by the curing surface. It determines whether the photoinitiator in the adhesive or coating absorbs enough energy to start and complete the curing reaction.
Irradiance tells you how intense the light is at a given moment, while energy density tells you how much total energy has been delivered over the exposure time. Both values are required to evaluate a UV LED curing process.
The basic formula for UV curing energy density is:
Energy Density (mJ/cm²) = Irradiance (mW/cm²) × Exposure Time (s)
Example: a UV LED lamp delivers an irradiance of 2000 mW/cm² at the curing surface, and the conveyor passes the material under the lamp in 0.75 seconds. The energy density is:
2000 mW/cm² × 0.75 s = 1500 mJ/cm²
This means the material receives 1500 mJ/cm² in one pass, which is a typical cure dose for many UV moisture dual-cure adhesives and conformal coatings.
In real production, irradiance is rarely uniform across the whole light window, so the energy density should be measured with a UV radiometer instead of calculated only from lamp ratings.
| Step | Action |
| 1 | Select a radiometer whose spectral response matches the LED wavelength (365 nm, 385 nm, 395 nm or 405 nm). |
| 2 | Place the sensor at the same height and position as the adhesive or coating surface. |
| 3 | Run the conveyor at the actual production speed and record the peak irradiance and total dose. |
| 4 | Compare the measured dose with the cure dose recommended by the adhesive supplier. |
| 5 | Record the values regularly to detect LED power decay or lamp window contamination. |
| Material Type | Typical Cure Dose |
| UV LED curing conformal coating (PCB protection) | 300 mJ/cm² |
| UV moisture dual-cure adhesive | 800-1500 mJ/cm² |
| Component fixing UV adhesive | 800 mJ/cm² |
| High-viscosity structural UV adhesive | 1200-3000 mJ/cm² |
UV LED curing energy density is the product of irradiance and exposure time, expressed in mJ/cm². Correct calculation and regular measurement with a wavelength-matched radiometer help manufacturers ensure complete curing, consistent quality and reliable bonding. When the required dose is difficult to reach in shadow areas, UV moisture dual-cure adhesives provide an effective solution.
